Google Business Profile: The Small Business Guide

The question comes up in every new business: what is Google Business Profile and how much does it cost? It is your business listing on Google: the box with the map and reviews that shows up when someone searches your name or your service. And it is free. Google charges nothing to create it or manage it. For a business that serves customers in person, that listing decides more calls than the website itself, because someone searching "locksmith near me" dials straight from the map and never opens a site.

"Your Google listing serves the customer before your phone ever rings."

Why the listing outweighs your website

When someone searches a service with local intent, Google shows a map block with three businesses first. That is where the call gets decided. Google's own help pages explain that the block is ordered by how relevant your listing is to the search and how close you are to the person searching. Reputation completes the formula, with reviews leading it. Your website still has a job: convincing the customer who compares carefully. The listing wins the one in a hurry.

How to create and verify it, step by step

Go to google.com/business with a Google account and search for your business by name. The Google Business Profile listing often exists already, assembled by Google from public data, and the right move is to claim it as yours. If it does not exist, you create it in five minutes.

Enter the name exactly as it appears on your storefront and your documents. Google's rules prohibit stuffing the name with extra words ("Lopez Locksmith 24 Hours Miami Cheap"), and that violation is the kind that ends in suspension. Then pick your category and set your address or your service area. The phone number you list should be the one you actually answer.

Google decides the verification method, and these days it frequently asks for a short video walking through your location, though in other cases it sends a code by phone or a postcard to the address. Video review can take up to five business days according to Google's help pages. Until you verify, the listing stays hidden from the public. Be patient those days.

The fields that carry the most weight

The primary category

It is the strongest filter. A truck repair shop categorized as a "tire shop" gets left out when someone searches diesel repair, even if it is the best in town at that work. Pick the most specific category that exists and add secondary categories for the rest of your services.

Hours and phone number

Google paints "Closed" in red whenever your hours say you are unavailable, and that red sends the customer to the competitor next door without you ever knowing. An outdated phone number is worse. Every search becomes a missed call.

Photos

Upload real photos of your location and of finished work, taken with your phone in good light. Stock photos get spotted instantly. The customer wants to see where they are headed and what the last customer received.

Reviews

They are the signal that moves the listing most against similar competitors. Ask for them the same day as the service, using the direct link the listing dashboard generates for you. This is exactly what we build in Addendo's local SEO work: the listing tuned field by field and a flow that asks for the review while the customer is happy.

A number to calibrate with

Buying reviews stopped being a cheap shortcut. The FTC rule in effect since October 2024 allows fines of up to $51,744 per violation for fake reviews, and Google suspends listings for the same offense. One purchased review can cost you the entire listing.

Mistakes that cost you calls

  • A name stuffed with extra words. It looks clever until the suspension arrives, and recovering a suspended listing takes weeks of appeals.
  • Duplicate listings. Google splits reviews and signals between the two, and both lose positions. Request a merge through the listing's support.
  • Unanswered questions and reviews. Anyone can answer the public questions section, including a competitor. Answer them yourself first.

Our opinion: a well-run listing out-earns many $5,000 websites in phone calls, and most owners give it zero minutes a month. An honest limit: this does you no good if you sell online only, without in-person contact, because Google's rules require direct customer contact to hold a listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Business Profile really free?

Yes. Your Google Business Profile costs zero to create and zero to manage. If someone calls charging you to "register your business on Google," they are selling you a free procedure. Google sells advertising separately, and the listing lives complete without spending a dollar.

Can I have a listing if I work from home?

Yes, as a service-area business. You hide your address and define the cities you serve, and the listing competes in those areas the same way a storefront listing does.

How long until my listing shows up?

A few days after verification. Later edits usually appear within minutes or hours, though some go through a Google review before publishing.

Your homework for this week

Search your business on Google exactly the way a customer would type it. If the listing does not exist, create it today. If it exists unclaimed, claim it. And if you already manage it, check two things before anything else: that the category matches your trade exactly and that the phone number is current. The short link for requesting reviews sits in the listing dashboard: send it today to your last three happy customers.
